Therapeutic massage is the term I use to differentiate European or Swedish massage from Asian style massage. Therapeutic massage is a bio-mechanical approach relying on the science of anatomy, physiology and pathology to formulate a treatment approach. This is quite different from the non-physical energy based work of Asian style massage. Therapeutic massage employs a massage table. The client is undressed to their comfort level, resting comfortably under clean sheets on the table. Only the areas to be massaged are undraped, the rest of the body is covered with cotton sheets and a blanket. A light oil may be used in the application of certain techniques to reduce excessive friction to the skin. These movements warm up the muscle tissue, releasing tension and gradually breaking up muscle “knots” or adhered areas, called adhesions. In addition to dealing with acute and chronic conditions, Therapeutic massage promotes a relaxation response which supports the healing process.
