Natural Health Practitioner

A registered Natural Health Practitioner since 1991, I offer you extensive training and experience in a wide range of Asian healing arts: mindfulness meditation, massage, acupuncture, tai chi, chi gung and yoga. Over the years, I have worked with clients who have had a wide spectrum of conditions – from the extreme of AIDS or cancer or addictions to more benign acute conditions such as muscle tension or strain. I have been invited to work in a variety of treatment settings: clinical office, home visits, in a hotel spa and onsite in offices and film shoots.  I continue to cultivate my life long interest in these healing and martial arts, enhancing my skills to benefit myself and my clients. Indeed, in January 2012 I began the process of upgrading my massage credentials by  joining the fast track program at Northumberland College where we are studying therapeutic massage in depth. My fellow students and I will graduate from this 2200 hour program in June 2014.

My approach to your health and healing emphasizes the intricate relationship of the body, mind, emotions and spirit. It continues to intrigue me how a change in one area inevitably affects the others.

I view my role in our relationship as that of an ally, one who will encourage as well as challenge so as to facilitate the appropriate change that moves you toward your goal of better health.

Here is a list of therapeutic services on offer.

Addictions

I have over 20 years experience working with addictions and compulsive behaviours in private practice and as a therapist with Addiction Prevention And Treatment Services (APTS) within the Capital Health Region of Nova Scotia. During these years with APTS, I introduced mindfulness practices including chi gung, meditation and acupuncture into client services. I designed and delivered a broad range of client educational programs including the ‘Three Levels of Logic: the Neurobiology of Addictions’ and ‘One Breath, One Step: Mindfulness and the 12 Steps’.

In the spring of 2011 I led the first Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) program for clinicians in the Maritimes, hosted by APTS in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.

I was the chair the APTS Acupuncture Committee for many years – one which pioneered efforts to coordinate service delivery between APTS and Mental Health Services. I was part of the APTS acupuncture research team, co-hosted with Dalhousie University, which produced a study on anxiety and acudetox titled ‘Determining the efficacy of auricular acupuncture for reducing anxiety in patients withdrawing from psychoactive drugs ‘ (Journal of Substance Abuse treatment). Along with an APTS colleague , I was Co-author of the Abstract ‘Experiencing NADA – The Role of Acupuncture in Addictions Treatment’, presented at the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine 2007 Annual Conference. In September of 2011, I made a presentation at the Alberta Government’s Action on Wellness Symposium titled ‘The Courage to Be Present: Mindfulness, Wellness and Addictions’.

NADA Trainer

I am one of the most experienced trainers registered in Canada with the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA). A Registered Trainer since 1999, I have facilitated numerous trainings in Canada and the U.S. In this role I was able to introduce acudetox acupuncture into the APTS services of Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick, Manitoba and the Canadian Department of Defence. I am the honoured recipient of two NADA awards: Vision and Leadership, 2004; Most Valuable Trainer, 2005. I happen to be the first international member to sit on the NADA Board of Directors.
